SUNY Fredonia MACS Scholarship

How useful is a Computer Science degree in many different industries?

Jeff Majka is a 2002 graduate from SUNY Fredonia receiving his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a Minor in Business Administration. He was a two time recipient of the Arthur Maytum Scholarship for Excellence in Computer Science. Jeff will be receiving his MBA from the University at Buffalo School of Management in May. He began working at Ecology and Environment Inc, in Lancaster, NY during the summer of 2002. E&E is a broad-based environmental consulting, testing, engineering, and design firm operating from 27 U.S. offices and subsidiaries and affiliates around the world. He currently works in the Information Technology and Geographic Information Systems Group.

Jeff was a member of E & E’s team for the development and implementation of a data collection system for the largest public health survey ever conducted in Saudi Arabia. As the leader of a team of international programmers, they developed a web-based data entry system and provided QA/QC for the collected data. He worked closely with analysts from Johns Hopkins’ School of Public Health to ensure proper data maintenance and transfer. He traveled to Saudi Arabia to oversee system implementation and to train the system programmers.

In addition, for the Saudi Arabian Presidency of Meteorology and Environment, Jeff was E & E’s lead programmer for the field application of hand-held technology used as part of in-country monitoring and assessment studies in support of environmental claims for damages incurred by the Gulf War. While in Saudi Arabia, he also supported data management and analysis and designed the field QC database used to verify field data.

Jeff is also a member of Green Ride’s sales and product development team for an on-line, interactive Geographic Information System which provides carpool matching to commuters nationwide. He has worked on the product from its initial design to its public launch now implemented in several cities across the US.

Jeff will be discussing how a degree in sciences, such as computer science, can be beneficial in many different industries. He will discuss how the education received can be applied to many facets of a company, and show how the education received at Fredonia gave him the skills necessary to succeed.
